Refill your cup: A reminder to prioritize yourself

Life can feel full from the moment the day begins. Between getting the children ready for school, packing lunches, helping with homework, keeping track of projects, managing full-time work, running a household, preparing meals, doing laundry, and handling school drop-offs, pick-ups, and extracurricular activities, it is easy to feel stretched in every direction.

In the middle of all these responsibilities, it is important to set aside at least an hour each day to rest and recover. Whether that means reading a book, watching television, listening to music, going for a walk, or doing a little yoga, that time matters.

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Women often focus so much on helping everyone else thrive that they forget to care for themselves. Taking time to recharge is not selfish; it is necessary.

Having a social circle that does not revolve only around your spouse and children is important. It gives you space to connect, grow, and remember the parts of yourself that exist outside of daily responsibilities.

Simple Ways to Prioritise Yourself

  • Join a dance class.
  • Become part of a book club.
  • Try yoga or another gentle form of exercise.
  • Explore a hobby you enjoy, or try something completely new.

Beyond individual activities, make time to connect with close friends. Meet for coffee or lunch, plan a playdate, go to the park, or have a braai. Spending time with people who understand how demanding life can be helps you feel supported, seen, and less alone.

Staying connected to the outside world helps you avoid isolation. Investing in yourself is one of the most valuable gifts you can give. Make that commitment and keep it, even on days when other priorities seem more urgent. Choose to make yourself a priority again.
